Seedlings Update

Back at the end of March I said that the TreeProject seedlings were ready to go. By then the tallest of them, the river red gums, Eucalyptus camaldulensis, had reached 60cms tall:

Well look at how tall they are now:
85cm! They've grown an extra 25cms in the last two months. They are a ridiculous height:
Fortunately we've finally heard that they are to be delivered for planting in a couple of weeks. I spent some time over the last two days making sure they are all in good health, with no weeds, and no roots growing out the bottom of the tubes. Trimming the roots now will mean they are less likely to be damaged when they are planted out.

Although the river red gums are the tallest, others are not far behind. Here's a manna gum, Eucalyptus viminalis, reaching 80cms:
They've actually grown faster, adding 30cms in the last two months.

It's a shame they weren't all planted out in April. We've had lots of rain this autumn, so they could have spent this time settling in to their environment, instead of growing like crazy in their tiny tubes. Let's hope for their sake there is plenty of rain over winter as well.
